Title: Sustainable Cities as Ultimate Complex Systems

Abstract:
Prof. Sen will try to pull together current thinking on the diverse issues we must associate with a city with the hope that such an overview may help our march towards a vision of a sustainable future city.
About the speaker: Surajit Sen, a professor of physics at the State University of New York at Buffalo since 1993, is a theoretical statistical and nonlinear physicist. He earned a PhD working on statistical mechanics at The University of Georgia (1990), which was followed by postdoc appointments at the University of Minnesota (1989-90) and Michigan State University (1990-1993). Prof. Sen was most recently a Distinguished Visiting Professor at IIT Jodhpur (2023). He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He has been a member of APS Fellowship, Beller and Marshak Scholar, Scientific Freedom of Scientists, and the Sakharov Prize committees, etc. of the APS. He was a Fulbright-Nehru Fellow in India in 2017-18 and a Jefferson Science Fellow (JSF) of the US National Academies in 2020-2021. As a JSF he served as a Senior Science Advisor at the US Agency for International Development in Washington, DC, where he advised the US government on development research. In his spare time he works to improve the lives of the less privileged in rural Bengal. His primary research interests are on complex dynamical systems involving physical and social settings.
